This date was set by the project law number 10.639, on January 9, 2003. Was chosen the date of November 20, it was on this day in the year 1695, who died Zumbi, the leader of Quilombo dos Palmares.
A homage to Zumbi was more than fair, since it represented the historical character of the black struggle against slavery in the period of colonial Brazil. He died in combat defending their people and their community. Quilombos represented a resistance to the slave system and also a form of collective maintenance of African culture in Brazil. Zombie fought to the death for this culture and freedom of its people.
The creation of this date was important because it serves as a time of reflection and awareness about the importance of culture and African people in the formation of national culture. The black Africans contributed a lot during our history, in the political, social, religious and gastronomic our country. It is a day that we celebrate in schools, cultural centers and other locations, valuing african-Brazilian culture.
The abolition of slavery, so official, came only in 1888. However, blacks have always resisted and fought against oppression and injustice resulting from slavery.
Vale also say that whenever there was a recovery of historical characters white. As Brazil's history had been built only by Europeans and their descendants. Emperors, navigators, explorers, military leaders and others were always considered national heroes. Now we have the promotion of a black leader in our history and we hope that soon other historical characters of African origin are valued by our people and our history. Important steps are being taken in this direction, as in Brazilian schools is already mandatory inclusion of disciplines and content designed to study the history of Africa and african-Brazilian culture.
